Torres Novas Castle
The Torres Novas Castle was rebuilt at the end of the 12th century, by King Sancho I, during the Portuguese territory reconquest. During the 14th century, it was rebuilt during the reign of King Fernando I, after battles with Castile. It suffered serious damage in the 1755 earthquake and was later occupied by Napoleonic troops during the French invasions.
Gothic in style, it has a shield-shaped plan, with ten square towers protruding from the wall and is located at the highest point of the city. With gardens that invite you to stroll, its surroundings are the stage for the traditional Medieval Fair of Torres Novas, with emphasis on the Memories of History, where an escape route from the Castle is simulated, through the passage called Porta da Traição (Door of Betrayal), which refers to the " legend” of the existence of an underground tunnel between the Castle and the Lapas Caves.
