Abrantes Fortress
Built by King Afonso Henriques in the 12th century, the Abrantes Fortress played an important role as a strategic point in the defense of the Tagus Line. During this period, at the beginning of Portuguese nationality, and despite not having a Templar permanence, it stood out for its contribution to the defense of the territory against a possible Moorish invasion. From this period resulted some marks of Military architecture and Romanesque style. In the 13th century, during the King Dinis’ reign, it was remodeled, resulting in a work of Gothic Military architecture, despite some Romanesque particularities.
As you walk through the fortress, appreciate its castle, walls and keep, the latter resulting from a 13th-century remodeling, as well as part of the castle fence. Take the opportunity to discover the beautiful Castle’s Garden and enjoy the wonderful views over the Tagus River.
