Institution of the Order of Christ in Portugal by Pope John XXII

The extinction of the Order of the Temple implied the handover of its assets to the Knights Hospitaller. However, in Portugal, Dinis did not follow this guideline and provisionally attached the Templars' assets to the Crown. Meanwhile, he began negotiations with the Holy See for the creation of a new military religious order.

In March 1319, the Military Order of Our Lord Jesus Christ was instituted, by the Bull Ad ea ex quibus, given by Pope John XXII in Avignon, heir to all its spiritual and material riches, preserving its spirit of Crusade during the Discoveries.

The Military Order of Our Lord Jesus Christ had its first headquarters in the Santa Maria do Castelo Church, in Castro Marim.
